Customer.io Integration: Customers, Events and Segments from Chats – Customer.io at Binom

Updated 6 min read 13 / 25
Short answer

How to connect Customer.io to Binom: customers, events for workflows, segments, message history. Available on request.

The Customer.io integration with Binom passes data from conversations into your marketing: the AI employee creates or updates a customer, sends an event, adds the customer to a segment, and sees which messages the customer has received. Customer.io is available on request in the Binom dashboard: Integrations → More integrations → Customer.io.

What Binom can do in Customer.io

Binom here means your AI employee. Once Customer.io is connected, it calls the service's actions when a conversation needs that data. You decide which actions are available to it. In the dashboard, each action is marked: read (Binom only looks at data), write, or delete (Binom changes or deletes data in Customer.io).

Section What Binom can view What Binom can change
Customers Customers by email, attributes, segments, messages received Create or update, merge, delete
Events None Customer event and anonymous event
Segments Segments and their members Manual segment, add and remove
Broadcasts Campaigns, broadcasts, emails, metrics Create and send a broadcast

Can the chatbot hand a customer over to Customer.io?

Yes. Binom finds a customer by email ("Get Customers By Email") or creates one ("Add Or Update A Customer") and sends an event from the conversation ("Track Customer Event").

Customer message history

Binom can see which emails the customer has already received ("Lookup Messages Sent To A Customer") and takes this into account in its reply.

What access you will need

You can connect using either of these methods: an App API key, or a Site ID and Track API key. Details for each method are shown in the "Authentication" block on the Customer.io page in the dashboard.

How to get the Customer.io integration

Customer.io is connected on request: first, the Binom team sets up the integration for your account. The general catalog rules are described in the instructions how to connect a service from "More integrations".

  1. Open Integrations → More integrations, enter "Customer.io" in the "Search integrations" field, and open the Customer.io card.
  2. On the "Customer.io integration for the assistant" page, you will see the message "The integration is available on request. Request it now, and we will set it up for you as a priority." The assistant here is your Binom. The "Authentication" block shows which access you will need, and the "Actions" list shows everything Binom can do in Customer.io.
  3. Click "Request integration". The message "Request sent. You will receive a notification when the integration is available." will appear, and the button will change to "Requested".
  4. A Binom setup specialist will contact you. When the integration is ready, a "Connect" button will appear on the Customer.io page.
  5. Click "Connect," follow the steps in the "Connecting Customer.io" window, and click "Done". After "Connecting…", the status will change to "Connected". If you see "Confirmation has not arrived yet. The connection may still complete, so check again in a minute.", click "Check again".

How to choose what Binom can do in Customer.io

A connected integration does nothing until you allow actions. The dashboard states this directly: "Select the actions the assistant may call. While nothing is selected, it has no access to any of them."

  1. On the Customer.io page, tick the actions you need in the "Actions" list. The "Filter by actions" field helps you find them by name. The counter shows how many are selected.
  2. Check the "Ask before changing data" toggle. It is on by default: before any action that writes or deletes records, Binom will describe what it is about to do and wait for your reply.
  3. Click "Save". The message "Allowed actions saved" confirms the changes.

To get started, "Get Customers By Email", "Add Or Update A Customer", "Track Customer Event" and "Add Customers To Segment" are enough. Add update and delete actions when you are ready to let Binom make changes in Customer.io.

How to check that the integration works

  • Start a new conversation with your Binom, for example through the public chat link, and enter a test email. Check the customer and the event in Customer.io.

Possible problems

Binom does not use Customer.io data in its replies

What to check: the Customer.io status is "Connected", and the needed actions are ticked (for example "Add Or Update A Customer").
What to do: tick the actions and click "Save".
How to tell it is fixed: the "Allowed actions saved" message appears, and in a new conversation Binom replies using Customer.io data.

"Could not save the request. Please try again."

What to do: click "Request integration" again. If the message keeps appearing, write to support@binomai.com with the name of your Binom and the integration (Customer.io).
How to tell it is fixed: the button shows "Requested".

"The integration is temporarily unavailable – your request has been saved."

Nothing else to do: the request is saved, and you will get a notification when Customer.io can be connected.

"Reconnection required"

What it means: "The service no longer accepts saved access, so the assistant does not use it."
What to do: open the Customer.io page under More integrations, click "Reconnect" and go through the connection window again.
How to tell it is fixed: the status is "Connected".

"Could not start the connection. Please try again."

What to do: click "Connect" again. If the message keeps appearing, write to support@binomai.com with the name of your Binom, the integration (Customer.io) and a screenshot of the message.
How to tell it is fixed: the "Customer.io connection" window opens.

"Paid plan" instead of the connect button

The page will show "Available on a paid plan. Tell us what you need, and we will let you know when it launches." For what is included in each plan, see the plans and subscription prices page. For how to change your plan, see the guide how to change or upgrade your plan. After changing your plan, return to More integrations and open Customer.io again.

"You do not have permission to manage this section."

What this means: only users with the Owner or Admin access level can manage integrations.
What to do: ask the account owner to give you the Admin access level or to connect Customer.io yourself. More: access levels in a team.
How to tell it's resolved: after you refresh the page, the integration settings open.

If the problem persists, write to support@binomai.com or send "I want to talk to a person" in the chat with Tutor. Include the name of your Binom and the integration, and attach a screenshot of the message.

How to disconnect Customer.io

On the Customer.io page, click "Disconnect". The "Disconnect Customer.io?" dialog will show a warning: "The assistant will lose access to the service. To restore it, you will need to reconnect the integration and enter the access details again." Confirm, and "Integration disconnected" will appear.

Other common questions

Do I need a developer to integrate Customer.io?

No. You request Customer.io in Integrations → More integrations, the Binom team sets up the integration, and then you connect the account yourself and choose the actions.
