GitLab Integration: Issues from Bug Reports – GitLab in Binom

Updated 5 min read 08 / 16
Short answer

How to connect GitLab to Binom: issues from customer requests, status and notes. Available on request.

The GitLab integration with Binom passes customer bug reports to the development team: the AI employee creates a task in the project, reports its status, and adds a note. GitLab is available on request in the Binom dashboard: Integrations → More integrations → GitLab.

What Binom can do in GitLab

Binom here refers to your AI employee. After you connect GitLab, it calls the service's actions when the conversation needs that data. You decide which actions are available to it. In the dashboard, each action is marked: read (Binom only views data), write, or delete (Binom changes or deletes data in GitLab).

Section What Binom can view What Binom can change
Issues Project issues, notes, members Create, edit, move, note
Code Branches, commits, merge requests Branches, commits
Labels Project labels Create and edit
Environments Environments, deployments Create and stop environment

Can the chatbot create a task in GitLab?

Yes. Binom creates an issue in the right project ("Create Issue") with a description of the bug from the conversation.

Status and notes

Binom finds the issue ("Get Issue"), reports its state, and adds details as a note ("Create Issue Note").

What access you will need

You can connect using one of these methods: OAuth 2.0 sign-in (you log in to your service account and confirm access); OAuth 2.0 for a self-hosted installation; or a personal access token. Details for each method are shown in the "Authentication" section on the GitLab page in the dashboard.

How to get the GitLab integration

GitLab is connected on request: first, the Binom team sets up the integration for your account. General catalog rules are described in the instructions how to connect a service from "More integrations".

  1. Open Integrations → More integrations, enter "GitLab" in the "Search integrations" field, and open the GitLab card.
  2. The "GitLab integration for assistant" page will show the message "Integration is available on request. Request it now, and we will set it up for you as a priority." Here, the assistant is your Binom. The "Authentication" section shows which access you will need, and the "Actions" list shows everything Binom can do in GitLab.
  3. Click "Request integration". "Request sent. You will receive a notification when the integration is available." will appear, and the button will change to "Requested".
  4. A Binom setup specialist will contact you. When the integration is ready, a "Connect" button will appear on the GitLab page.
  5. Click "Connect", go through the steps in the "Connecting GitLab" window, and click "Done". After "Connecting…", the status will change to "Connected". If "Confirmation has not arrived yet. The connection may still complete: check again in a minute." appears, click "Check again".

How to choose what Binom can do in GitLab

A connected integration does nothing until you allow actions. The dashboard states this clearly: "Select the actions the assistant may call. Until something is selected, it has access to nothing."

  1. On the GitLab page, tick the actions you need in the "Actions" list. The "Filter by actions" field helps you find them by name. The counter shows how many are selected.
  2. Check the "Ask before changing data" toggle. It is on by default: before any write or delete action, Binom will describe what it plans to do and wait for your approval.
  3. Click "Save". The message "Allowed actions saved" confirms your changes.

To start, "List Project Issues", "Create Issue", "Get Issue" and "Create Issue Note" are enough. Add the update and delete actions when you're ready to let Binom make changes in GitLab.

How to check that the integration works

  • Start a new conversation with your Binom, for example through a public chat link, describe a test error, and check the issue in GitLab.

Possible problems

Binom doesn't use GitLab data in its answers

What to check: the GitLab status is "Connected", and the required actions are ticked (for example "Create Issue").
What to do: tick the actions and click "Save".
How to tell it's fixed: the message "Allowed actions saved" appears, and in a new conversation Binom answers using GitLab data.

"Couldn't save your request. Please try again."

What to do: click "Request integration" again. If the message keeps appearing, email support@binomai.com with the name of your Binom and the integration (GitLab).
How to tell it's fixed: the button shows "Requested".

"Integration is temporarily unavailable – your request has been saved."

You don't need to do anything else. Your request is saved, and you will get a notification when GitLab is available to connect.

"Reconnect needed"

What it means: "The service no longer accepts saved access, so the assistant doesn't use it."
What to do: open the GitLab page in More integrations, click "Reconnect", and go through the connection window again.
How to tell it's fixed: the status shows "Connected".

"Couldn't start the connection. Please try again."

What to do: click "Connect" again. If the message keeps appearing, email support@binomai.com with the name of your Binom, the integration (GitLab), and a screenshot of the message.
How to tell it's fixed: the "GitLab connection" window opens.

"On a paid plan" instead of the connect button

The page will show "Available on a paid plan. Tell us what you need, and we'll let you know when it launches." For what each plan includes, see the plans and subscription pricing page. For how to change your plan, see the guide how to change or upgrade your plan. After changing your plan, return to More integrations and open GitLab again.

"You don't have permission to manage this section."

What it means: only users with the Owner or Admin access level can manage integrations.
What to do: ask the account owner to give you the Admin access level, or to connect GitLab themselves. For more details, see access levels in your team.
How to tell it's fixed: after refreshing the page, the integration settings open.

If the problem is not resolved, write to support@binomai.com or send the message "I want to talk to a person" in the chat with Tutor. Include the name of the Binom, the integration, and attach a screenshot of the message.

How to disconnect GitLab

On the GitLab page, click "Disconnect". The "Disconnect GitLab?" window will show a warning: "The assistant will lose access to the service. To restore it, you will need to reconnect the integration and enter the access details again." Confirm, and "Integration disconnected" will appear.

Other common questions

Do I need a developer to set up the GitLab integration?

No. You request GitLab in the Integrations → More integrations section, the Binom team sets up the integration, and then you connect the account yourself and choose the actions.
