Basecamp integration: project cards and messages from chat – Basecamp in Binom

Updated 6 min read 12 / 16
Short answer

How to connect Basecamp to Binom: cards for requests, moving them between columns, comments and messages. Available on request.

The Basecamp integration with Binom turns requests from chats into cards and project messages: the AI employee creates a card, moves it across columns, writes a comment, and sends a message to the team. Basecamp is available on request in the Binom dashboard: Integrations → More integrations → Basecamp.

What Binom can do in Basecamp

Binom here refers to your AI employee. After Basecamp is connected, it calls the service's actions when the conversation needs that data. You decide which actions it can use. In the dashboard, each action is labeled: read (Binom only views data), write, or delete (Binom changes or deletes data in Basecamp).

Section What Binom can view What Binom can change
Cards Boards, cards, steps Create, edit, move, steps
Messages Message boards, messages Create, edit, pin
Comments Comments on items Create and edit
Documents and chats Documents, Campfire chats Create documents and chat lines

Can a chatbot create a task in Basecamp?

Yes. Binom creates a card on the project board ("Create A Card") with the essence of the request and adds a comment ("Create A Comment").

Status and team messages

Binom views cards ("Get Cards"), moves them to the right column ("Move A Card"), and posts a message for the team ("Create A Message").

What access will be needed

Connection method: sign in via OAuth 2.0 (you log in to your service account and confirm access). Details for each method are shown in the "Authentication" block on the Basecamp page in the dashboard.

How to get the Basecamp integration

Basecamp is connected on request: first, the Binom team sets up the integration for your account. General catalog rules are described in the instructions how to connect a service from "More integrations".

  1. Open Integrations → More integrations, enter "Basecamp" in the "Search integrations" field, and open the Basecamp card.
  2. On the "Basecamp integration for assistant" page, you will see the message "The integration is available on request. Request it now, and we will set it up for you as a priority." The assistant here is your Binom. The "Authentication" block shows what access will be needed, and the "Actions" list shows everything Binom can do in Basecamp.
  3. Click "Request integration". "Request sent. You will receive a notification when the integration is available." will appear, and the button will change to "Requested".
  4. A Binom setup specialist will contact you. When the integration is ready, a "Connect" button will appear on the Basecamp page.
  5. Click "Connect", go through the steps in the "Connecting Basecamp" window, and click "Done". After "Connecting…", the status will change to "Connected". If "Confirmation has not arrived yet. The connection may still complete: check again in a minute." appears, click "Check again".

How to choose what Binom can do in Basecamp

A connected integration does nothing until you allow actions. The dashboard states this clearly: "Select the actions the assistant may call. Until something is selected, it has no access to any of them."

  1. On the Basecamp page, tick the actions you need in the "Actions" list. The "Filter by actions" field helps you find them by name. The counter shows how many are selected.
  2. Check the "Ask before changing data" toggle. It is on by default: before any action that writes or deletes records, Binom will describe what it intends to do and wait for your reply.
  3. Click "Save". The message "Allowed actions saved" confirms the changes.

To get started, "Get Cards", "Create A Card", "Create A Comment" and "Create A Message" are enough. Add the update and delete actions when you are ready to trust Binom with changes in Basecamp.

How to check that the integration works

  • Start a new conversation with your Binom, for example through the public chat link, leave a test request, and check the card in Basecamp.

Possible problems

Binom does not use Basecamp data in its answers

What to check: that the Basecamp status is "Connected" and the needed actions are ticked (for example "Create A Card").
What to do: tick the actions and click "Save".
How to tell it is resolved: the message "Allowed actions saved" appears, and in a new conversation Binom answers using Basecamp data.

"Could not save the request. Please try again."

What to do: click "Request integration" again. If the message keeps appearing, write to support@binomai.com with the name of your Binom and the integration (Basecamp).
How to tell it is resolved: the button shows "Requested".

"Integration is temporarily unavailable – your request has been saved."

Nothing else is needed: the request is saved, and you will get a notification when Basecamp can be connected.

"Reconnect required"

What it means: "The service no longer accepts saved access, so the assistant does not use it."
What to do: open the Basecamp page in More integrations, click "Reconnect", and go through the connection window again.
How to tell it is resolved: the status is "Connected".

"Could not start the connection. Please try again."

What to do: click "Connect" again. If the message keeps appearing, write to support@binomai.com with the name of your Binom, the integration (Basecamp) and a screenshot of the message.
How to tell it is resolved: the "Connect Basecamp" window opens.

"On a paid plan" instead of the connect button

The page will show "Available on a paid plan. Tell us what you need, and we will let you know when it launches." For what each plan includes, see the plans and subscription pricing page, and for how to change your plan, see the guide how to change or upgrade your plan. After changing your plan, return to More integrations and open Basecamp again.

"You do not have permission to manage this section."

What it means: only users with the Owner or Admin access level can manage integrations.
What to do: ask the account owner to give you the Admin access level, or to connect Basecamp themselves. More details: access levels in a team.
How to tell it is resolved: after refreshing the page, the integration settings open.

If the problem is not resolved, write to support@binomai.com or send the message "I want to talk to a human" in the chat with Tutor. Include the name of your Binom, the integration, and attach a screenshot of the message.

How to disconnect Basecamp

On the Basecamp page, click "Disconnect". The "Disconnect Basecamp?" window will show a warning: "The assistant will lose access to the service. To restore it, you will need to connect the integration again and re-enter the credentials." Confirm, and the message "Integration disconnected" will appear.

Other common questions

Do I need a programmer to integrate Basecamp?

No. You request Basecamp in the Integrations → More integrations section, the Binom team configures the integration, and then you connect the account yourself and choose the actions.
