PagerDuty Integration: On-Call Staff and Incidents from Chat – PagerDuty in Binom

Updated 6 min read 07 / 21
Short answer

How to connect PagerDuty to Binom: who is on call, incidents created from outage reports, notes and status. Available on request.

The PagerDuty integration with Binom helps you respond to outages: your AI employee tells you who is currently on call, creates an incident from a problem report, and adds a note to it. PagerDuty is available on request in the Binom cabinet: Integrations → More integrations → PagerDuty.

What Binom can do in PagerDuty

Binom here means your AI employee. After you connect PagerDuty, it calls the service's actions when the conversation needs that data. You decide which actions it can use. In the cabinet, each action is labeled: read (Binom only views data), write, or delete (Binom changes or deletes data in PagerDuty).

Section What Binom can view What Binom can change
Incidents Incidents, notes, log Create, update, note
On-call Who is on call, schedules, escalation policies Create schedule
Services and teams Services, teams, users Create and update
Reference data Incident types, priorities No

Can Binom tell who is on call in PagerDuty right now?

Yes. Binom checks the on-call list ("List On-Calls") and names the person responsible.

Incident from an outage report

When a customer or employee reports an outage, Binom creates an incident ("Create Incident"), adds a note with the details ("Add Note To Incident"), and later reports the status ("Get Incident").

What access you will need

Connection method: API key. Details for each method are shown in the "Authentication" block on the PagerDuty page in the cabinet.

How to get the PagerDuty integration

PagerDuty is connected on request: first, the Binom team sets up the integration for your account. The general catalog rules are described in the instructions how to connect a service from "More integrations".

  1. Open Integrations → More integrations, enter "PagerDuty" in the "Search integrations" field, and open the PagerDuty card.
  2. On the "PagerDuty integration for assistant" page, you will see the message "Integration is available on request. Request it now, and we will set it up for you as a priority." Assistant here means your Binom. The "Authentication" block shows which access you will need, and the "Actions" list shows everything Binom can do in PagerDuty.
  3. Click "Request integration". The message "Request sent. You will receive a notification when the integration becomes available." appears, and the button changes to "Requested".
  4. A Binom setup specialist will contact you. When the integration is ready, a "Connect" button will appear on the PagerDuty page.
  5. Click "Connect," go through the steps in the "Connecting PagerDuty" window, and click "Done". After "Connecting…", the status will change to "Connected". If the message "Confirmation has not arrived yet. The connection may still complete; check again in a minute." appears, click "Check again".

How to choose what Binom can do in PagerDuty

A connected integration does nothing until you allow actions. The cabinet states this directly: "Select the actions the assistant may trigger. Until something is selected, it has no access to any of them."

  1. On the PagerDuty page, tick the actions you need in the "Actions" list. The "Filter by actions" field helps you find them by name. The counter shows how many are selected.
  2. Check the "Ask before changing data" toggle. It is on by default: before any action that writes or deletes data, Binom will describe what it plans to do and wait for your confirmation.
  3. Click "Save". The message "Allowed actions saved" confirms your changes.

To start, "List On-Calls", "List Incidents", "Create Incident" and "Add Note To Incident" are enough. Add the actions that change or delete data once you are ready to let Binom make changes in PagerDuty.

How to check that the integration works

  • Start a new conversation with your Binom, for example through a public chat link, ask who is on call now, and compare the answer with PagerDuty.

Possible problems

Binom does not use PagerDuty data in its answers

What to check: that the PagerDuty status is "Connected" and that the needed actions are ticked (for example "List Incidents").
What to do: tick the actions and click "Save".
How to tell it is fixed: the message "Allowed actions saved" appears, and in a new conversation Binom answers using PagerDuty data.

"Could not record the request. Please try again."

What to do: click "Request integration" again. If the message keeps appearing, write to support@binomai.com with the name of your Binom and the integration (PagerDuty).
How to tell it is fixed: the button shows "Requested".

"Integration is temporarily unavailable – your request has been recorded."

You do not need to do anything else: the request is saved, and you will receive a notification when PagerDuty can be connected.

"Reconnection needed"

What this means: "The service no longer accepts saved credentials, so the assistant cannot use them."
What to do: open the PagerDuty page in More integrations, click "Reconnect" and go through the connection window again.
How to tell it is fixed: the status shows "Connected".

"Could not start the connection. Please try again."

What to do: click "Connect" again. If the message keeps appearing, write to support@binomai.com with the name of your Binom, the integration (PagerDuty) and a screenshot of the message.
How to tell it is fixed: the "Connecting PagerDuty" window opens.

"On a paid plan" instead of the connect button

The page will show "Available on a paid plan. Tell us what you need, and we will let you know when it launches." For what each plan includes, see the plans and subscription pricing page, and for how to change your plan, see the guide how to change or upgrade your plan. After changing your plan, return to More integrations and open PagerDuty again.

"You do not have permission to manage this section."

What this means: only users with the Owner or Admin access level can manage integrations.
What to do: ask the account owner to give you the Admin access level or to connect PagerDuty yourself. More details: access levels in a team.
How to tell it is fixed: after refreshing the page, the integration settings open.

If the problem is not resolved, write to support@binomai.com or send the message "I want to talk to a person" in the chat with Tutor. Include the name of your Binom, the integration, and attach a screenshot of the message.

How to disconnect PagerDuty

On the PagerDuty page, click "Disconnect". The "Disconnect PagerDuty?" window will show a warning: "The assistant will lose access to the service. To restore it, you will need to reconnect the integration and enter the access details again." Confirm, and the message "Integration disconnected" will appear.

Other Common Questions

Do I need a developer to integrate PagerDuty?

No. You request PagerDuty in the Integrations → More integrations section, the Binom team sets up the integration, and then you connect the account yourself and choose the actions.
